The school, which was originally located on Jeff Road in Toney, opened in 1958 and was named after senator and former vice presidential nominee John Jackson Sparkman. The current location opened in 1997 and the old building became Sparkman Middle School. In 2006, Sparkman Ninth Grade Academy opened across the street from the current location.
